Royal Spas of Indiana recommends turning the spa off when taking out the skimmer or filter for cleaning.  Only turn power on when the reinstallation of the cleaned filter cartridge or the new replacement cartridge is complete.

Some Royal Spa hot tubs use a pressurized filter canister that will require loosening the bleeder valve until water starts to come out before opening the filter ring and compartment.

Royal recommends cleaning your filter at least every 4-6 weeks with a garden hose and also with a spray on filter cleaner.  In addition to cleaning the cartridge filter, the manufacturer also recommends cleaning the skimmer basket and removing any leaves or debris.   Unscrew the filter basket and then pull it out. Be sure to turn off power to the spa before attempting any filter cleaning or filter basket removal.

The pressurized filter compartment has a filter lid with a bleeder valve in addition to a filter lid handle for easy removal of the lid.  A lock-ring is also part of this assembly.  Finally, be sure not to damage the o-ring that goes outside the filter.  Spas with pressure filters typically have a skimmer instead of a floating weir door since the entire filtration system is under pressure.  Note that this type of spa skimmer pulls water through the skimmer basket which can be removed for cleaning by un-threading the skimmer retainer and then removing the basket.
